Igor Kokoškov, College - Belgrade University '93
Entering his third season on the Clippers bench, Igor Stefan Kokoškov has proven himself to be a tireless teacher. A native of Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro, Kokoškov is the first full-time, non-American assistant coach in NBA history. Igor came to the Clippers after spending the 1999-2000 season as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri, where he coaches Clippers guard Keyon Dooling. Upon joining the Missouri staff in the summer of 1999, Kokoskov became the first European coach to hold a full-time position with an NCAA Division I school.
Prior to his move to the United States, Kokoškov had been instructing Yugoslavia's top amateur and professional players for eight years, including a stint as the assistant coach of Yugoslavia's Junior National Team. In 1995, he took over the head coaching duties of BC Belgrade at the age of 24, making him the youngest head coach in the history of Yugoslavian basketball. This past offseason, Kokoskov was an instructor at "Basketball Without Borders", a three day basketball camp in Treviso, Italy which also included NBA players Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoc and Pedja Stojakovic.

How to approach a decisive match, the match under great psychological and competitive pressure. Mostly such matches decide on the destiny of us- coaches. It is possible that a player with one, maybe decisive point or rebound, with good defense compensates and let all the bad that preceeded the match be forgotten. Big quarter finals at the Olympics and World Championships do not only decide on who will continue fighting for medals, but they also destroy four-year long competition ambitions, numerous trainings, selfsacrifices, dreams. Finals as a rule are easier to prepare, because the best will always win. How to set a decisive match of play-off or any other that has to be won, how to make a "break" at the opponent's court with the quality rival who knows to use all the advantages offered by his own court.

Although it's hard to resist, I've never looked forward to quick and easy led of ten or more points at the beginning of the match. As a rule there is a fall in concentration and it's only a matter how quickly an opponent will establish a score balance. I never use newly set offense or defense detail at the beginning of the match. The opponent's coach will read them very early. Easily achieved points from the newly set detail I rather save for key moments, when the match is slowed, ie. to offer new solution when one has to score. Easy points at the match beginning are "back door", dunking, it is possible that they surprise opponent's rivals, but they hardly provide safe entry into the game. |

The issue of PnR is always
a current coach topic... no matter what is the level of competition
or quality of the players you work with. According to some coaches,
PnR is the basic means of offense while according to the others it's
only an additional one. Anyway, PnR is very popular in offense, it
is used very much and thus I think that one should pay attention to
this issue. Personally I'm not a coach that likes PnR, offensive,
but I must be ready to use it in offense and to defend from it because
it is very popular with the NBA. Coaches even like to say that the
defense of the NBA team is as good as the PnR defense is good. Of
course, no matter what your coaching philosophy is you will certainly
take into account in the offense phase the player' personnel that
you have in your team; if we speak of a team that you haven't chosen
yourself. As it is common in our business... the coaching quality
is the capability to "adjust" and the possibility to approach
new players and team as a whole. The amount of the various team types
that you are capable of coaching is limited above all by your knowledge
of coaching. Look for example at Houston and the coach Tomljanovic.
He has for many years had the most dominant league center Olajuwon;
at present he almost hasn't got a "5" in team... fantastic
coach transformation. |
